John Lawrence Excited for "Small-Town Feel" in Return to State Street IntermediateSkaneateles has always had a piece of John Lawrence’s heart.
Lawrence began his teaching career at State Street Intermediate over a decade ago as a physical education teacher. Thirteen years later, Lawrence returns to serve as the new principal at the school he started his career with.
A lot has changed since the last time Mr. Lawrence held a physical education class at State Street.
For Lawrence, the community is exactly how he has always treasured it.
“I think the thing with Skaneateles that I’ve always appreciated is the small-town feel,” Lawrence said. “Everyone knows each other. It’s a real positive thing to be a part of.”
Lawrence brings plenty of experience in his return to the District. He spent several years in the West Genesee Central School District before serving as the principal of Lakeshore Road Elementary in the North Syracuse Central School District for the previous two school years.
For Lawrence, the chaotic nature of being an administrator makes his passion for education even stronger.
“Every day is a little bit different. Every day offers opportunities and challenges,” Lawrence said. “Knowing that every day you’re going to be on your toes doing something engaging for staff and students really draws me to this position.”
Lawrence brings with him a vision of pushing students to new levels of creative thinking. At State Street, Lawrence believes this vision will become a reality.
“State Street is, has been, and always will be a really fantastic school,” Lawrence said. “You can really push kids to do a little more, try new things, be creative and step outside their comfort zone.”
Returning to a community like Skaneateles is very special to Lawrence. The combination of a small-town feel with a tradition of academic excellence is something that has Lawrence ecstatic for the upcoming school year.
“I’m excited to be back here in Skaneateles,” Lawrence said. “Getting back to where I started my career is very dear to me.”
