Students Give Back through '12 Days of Giving'
SKANEATELES, NY (December 11, 2017) – Students in Peter O’Connor’s fourth grade class at State Street Elementary School in Skaneateles are once again working together this holiday season, giving back to the community through their second annual ’12 Days of Giving.’Following the success of last year’s ’12 Days’, O’Connor has rekindled the magic for this year, as he and his students have teamed up with others at State Street to give back to the community for consecutive school days.
“From picking up trash at Austin Park, to helping pets, elderly, and the military; my students had some amazing ideas for this year’s ’12 Days,’” said O’Connor. “Our brain storming and efforts will hopefully lead to ownership in our giving. Most importantly, we hope to continue building character and encouraging the idea of doing things for others, especially at this time of year.”
The ’12 Days’ began on Friday, December 8 as O’Connor’s class teamed with Kathy Herr’s third grade class to make paper poinsettias and cards, which were sent to the Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Syracuse.
The ’12 Days’ continues each school day leading up to the first day of Christmas break on Friday, December 22.
Included in the giving will be a book drive, stocking stuffers for the Skaneateles Outreach Program, the annual Interact Club cookie drive, a paper product drive for the Skaneateles food pantry, donations of gently used sporting equipment to Tillie’s Touch, pet treat donations to the Auburn SPCA, and a fresh fruit drive for the Syracuse Samaritan House.
The ’12 Days’ will conclude with O’Connor’s students travelling to Waterman Primary School on Wednesday, December 20 to read their favorite Christmas book to first graders, before helping to clean the State Street cafeteria on Thursday, December 21 as a thank you to school custodian, Jim Muir.
