Dear Waterman Families,

It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to Waterman Primary School.  Our warm, caring, professional, and talented staff take pride in welcoming our community’s children to their first formal schooling experience, and to inspiring and instilling in our children a love of learning, pride in effort, and wonder in exploration.  Our goal, in accordance with our district mission, in collaboration with our families and community, and through our curriculum and culture, is to set a strong initial foundation upon which our students can grow to be citizens:

  • Who are well (relative to the six domains of wellness);
  • Who appreciate the value of learning and who themselves are inspired to become lifelong learners;
  • Who have the capacity to reflect, set goals, work toward those goals, and adapt as necessary;
  • Who have the capacity to work respectfully and productively with others;
  • Who have the knowledge and skills necessary to help them reach their goals (relative to the NYS standards for learning).
Said differently, we want to create the conditions under which students will develop into healthy adults who ready to pursue their passions.  With respect to these goals, we believe that Waterman is truly “A Great Place to Begin.” Our faculty at Waterman embraces a child-centered approach to learning. We continually strive to ensure that our curriculum and instruction are grounded in research-based best practices, and that our culture is rooted in a growth mindset that fosters overall wellness for both children and adults.  Additionally, we believe that building positive, meaningful partnerships with families and community groups supports robust student learning and healthful personal and social development, and we are committed to teaming with our families and community to support and enhance our students’ education and nurture their wellness.

As lifelong learners ourselves, our staff is committed to ongoing professional learning, which continually helps us to design challenging and fun learning experiences that meet the unique needs of each of our students.  We are also committed to offering robust art, music, physical education, and STEM programs, as we believe in a well-rounded educational experience for our students.

Waterman is a special place.  You can feel the warmth as soon as you walk through the door, because our faculty and staff has taken the time to create an environment in which our “Little Lakers” will develop a love of learning, an appreciation and respect for others, an ethic of effort, and a sense of exploration and wonder.  It is our privilege to welcome your children into our school, and as your teammates,  we are always here to support your children and you.  Welcome to Waterman.  Laker pride!

Sincerely,
Christopher Casler-Gonçalves
