Mark Wood to Perform at Skaneateles High School Tuesday, Student Rehearsals Underway:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 13, 2017) – For the first time since 2012, Grammy-Award winning rock violinist Mark Wood will return to the Skaneateles High School Auditorium on Tuesday as a part of the 2017 “Lead Your Students to Victory” tour. Student rehearsals for the performance have been ongoing throughout the day on Monday.
The electrifying performance, which will see Wood perform with Skaneateles Orchestra students, will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Wood took time through the day on Monday to meet and rehearse with the high school, middle school, and State Street orchestras to go over specific pieces that will be performed Tuesday evening as well as reinforcing the importance of discipline, practice, and “feeling” the music.

Author David Kirk to Visit Waterman on Friday:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 8, 2017) – David Kirk, the creator of the Miss Spider series of children’s books, will visit Waterman Primary School on Friday.
Included in the collection of Miss Spider books are Miss Spider’s Tea Party, Miss Spider’s Wedding, Miss Spider’s New Car, Miss Spider’s ABC, Little Miss Spider, and many more. Miss Spider also stars in her own television series, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends.
An inventor and toy maker, Kirk started Ovicular Toyworks and Hoobert Toys along with authoring his many pieces of work through the years.

Bus Driver Turns Everything Into an Opportunity for Learning:

For students at Waterman School, every walk into the building in the morning brings an opportunity for learning.
Bus driver Eddy Paul has the “Apple” bus parked right by the cross walk and guides or instructs students as they pass the line of buses and head into school. When he catches students crossing safely, he gives them his carefully created safety certificates.
Paul hands out a couple of the certificates each day, surprising and pleasing students.

SKANEATELES, NY (March 3, 2017) – Members of the Skaneateles Middle School sixth grade took part in the semi-final round of the “Battle of the Books” this afternoon, a competition focused on building study skills.
Four teams took part in the competition with the winner of each semi-final round taking part in the “Battle of the Books” finale on Monday afternoon.
The competition featured questions from six pieces of literature including A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck, Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George, Scat by Carl Hiaagen, Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz, The Pinballs by Betsy Byars, and Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan.

Skaneateles High School senior Ethan Goldstein is among a highly select group of candidates in the United States Presidential Scholars program this year.
Of the nearly 3.5 million high school seniors in the United States, Goldstein is one of about 4,000 selected to compete in the program. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars.
Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 53rd year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

Superintendent Slentz Meets Rotarians, Talks Future:
The future was in the spotlight when Superintendent Ken Slentz spoke to the Skaneateles Rotary Club recently.
“In the past, I’ve told you more about the ‘WHAT’,” Slentz said. “Now, we are talking more about the ‘WHY.’”
In everything the district is doing – from curriculum and budget planning to Project 2021 development – the future is key. Guided by the best research available, the district is looking ahead three, five and ten years or more. Where once there was an awareness that schools were preparing students for jobs in the future that didn’t exist yet, “now we are preparing kids for jobs NEXT YEAR that we don’t have names for,” Slentz said.
