SMS Students Spread Holiday Cheer with Annual Holiday Shopping Spree:
SKANEATELES, NY (December 13, 2018) – Skaneateles Middle School students, in conjunction with the Skaneateles Middle School Student Council, took part in the 18 th annual Holiday Shopping Spree at Target on Wednesday afternoon.
Thanks to the help of private donations and the Student Council, students went to Target armed with $15,000 to purchase gifts for children who otherwise may not get any this Christmas.
The students were split into separate shopping groups, with each having 90 minutes to shop. Each item purchased was under $15, making for a large number of toys, books and games collected.

Sophomore Class to Host "Parents' Day Off" this Saturday, December 15:
SKANEATELES, NY (December 11, 2018) – The Skaneateles High School sophomore class will be hosting a “Parents’ Day Off” this Saturday, December 15 for all kids Kindergarten through fifth grade.
Parents can drop off their children this Saturday from 1-5 p.m. to participate in various activities inside the high school including arts and crafts, games and a movie. The goal is to give parents some much needed free time during the holiday season, while also raising money for the sophomore class.
The cost is $20 for one child and $10 for each additional child. Families of four children or more are $50.

Laker Roundup: SHS Winter Sports in Full Swing:
SKANEATELES, NY (December 11, 2018) – Winter sports are in full swing at Skaneateles High School as the hockey and basketball teams competed in several contests last week.
Both the boys and girls hockey teams remain unbeaten on the season with the boys standing at 4-0-1 and the girls at 4-0.
The boys tied Homer last week 4-4 before defeating McQuaid 6-5, each on the road. For the week, Garrett Krieger notched a hat trick versus McQuaid with Ryan Gick, Colin Weeks and Cole Heintz all scoring two goals across the two games.
The girls dominated Oswego on the road 6-0 as Megan Teachout led the way with two goals. Ioanna Christou, Sophia Burns, Rachelle Cain and Rebecca Cain all tallied goals.

Food Demo Displays Uses of Hydroponics:
On Friday afternoon School Lunch Director Emily Cullen and Kristina Didio, a former SCS student and SU Dietetic Intern, visited Scott Stagnitta's Principles of Applied Technologies class, otherwise known as Hydroponics, for a food demonstration.
Didio used the basil currently being grown in Hydroponics to put together a fantastic pesto sauce, which was used on a Cheesy Pesto Bread. This served as yet another way that students could see their work and effort in Hydroponics being put to use in everyday applications!

State Street Students Working with Artist Sharon Bottle Souva:
SKANEATELES, NY (December 10, 2018) – State Street Intermediate School’s fourth grade students are working with visiting artist, Sharon Bottle Souva, thanks to a grant from the Skaneateles Education Foundation.
“Sharon created fabric handworks and is coming in as a professional artist to share her talents and knowledge about the history of quilt making,” said Skaneateles Central Schools Elementary Art teacher, Sue Barry.
Fourth grade students will create their own quilt block, which will be displayed together, then taken down individually and taken home.
Souva has been quilt making since 1976, with her work being shown in numerous private collections, museums and galleries around the country.

Wood Frog Named Official Amphibian of Onondaga County:
At the December 6 Skaneateles Town Hall meeting, County Executive Ryan McMahon signed an Executive Order naming the Wood Frog as the official amphibian of Onondaga County. Members of the Wood Frog Club, including Lili Winkelman - who has worked tirelessly the last several years to make the Wood Frog the official amphibian of New York State - were on hand. This is a great step for the club's overall goal. Thanks to all involved!

State Street Concert Provides Well Wishes for Kristen Mulcahy:
State Street Intermediate School held their Holiday Orchestra, Choir and Band Concert last night at the high school. Ms. Quick thanked all the teachers and students for all their hard work, and the parents and the Music Guild for their continued support of the music program in Skaneateles.
Last night was also Kristen Mulcahy's final concert in Skaneateles, after 16 years in the District. We wish her the best in her retirement!

Elementary PTC 'Penguin Patch Holiday Shop' Running through December 6 at Waterman:
SKANEATELES, NY (December 4, 2018) – The Skaneateles Elementary PTC ‘Penguin Patch Holiday Shop’ is running through December 6 at Waterman Primary School.
The ‘Penguin Patch Holiday Shop’ is a fun and memorable way for students to shop for family & friends on their holiday list at kid-friendly prices. All gifts range from $0.25 to $12.
The shop also raises money for the Skaneateles Elementary PTC.
The shop is open through Thursday, December 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with all classes scheduled to participate during specific times.

AP Chill Zone Coming to Skaneateles High School:
SKANEATELES, NY (December 4, 2018) – The Skaneateles High School Counseling Department is pleased to announce the start of a monthly and informative series during Activity Period, known as AP Chill Zone .
The AP Chill Zone will see high school counselors provide students with useful tools and tips in a variety of areas, such as relaxation, study skills, organization, stress relief, social skills and much more.

Interact Club Cookie Drive Set for December 13:
SKANEATELES, NY (December 3, 2018) – The Skaneateles Central Schools Interact Club will once again hold its annual Cookie Drive on Thursday, December 13 in the Skaneateles High School commons area.
The Cookie Drive will help to add sweetness to Skaneateles Outreach holiday gift baskets for area families in need.

SHS Celebrates Highly Successful Holiday Food Drive:
SKANEATELES, NY (November 30, 2018) – The Skaneateles High School Food Drive saw three large containers of food delivered to the Skaneateles Food Pantry on Thursday afternoon.
Members of the Student Involvement Team (SIT) organized the food drive, which saw all Skaneateles High School classes as well as staff take part.
At the end of the drive, the Class of 2019 donated the most food items, topping the staff and the freshman class.

SCS in Search of Used iPhone or Android Devices for Virtual Reality Lessons:
SKANEATELES, NY (November 29, 2018) – Skaneateles Central Schools is in search of unwanted iPhone or Android devices that can be used in classroom applications as virtual reality goggles.
iPhone devices must be iPhone 5s and up.
“From time to time our students use these devices in virtual reality lessons so they can travel to Gettysburg, Ellis Island, or even Normandy,” said Skaneateles Middle School teacher, Jim Ryan. “The problem is, not every student has their own device to use. With that said, we are looking for any WiFi capable devices, such as an iPhone, that may be sitting around at home, unused. We can take those devices and put them to good use at school.”

Senator Bob Antonacci Meets with SHS Wood Frog Club:
SKANEATELES, NY (November 29, 2018) – Skaneateles High School freshman, Lili Winkelman (pictured far left), has been working since 2014 to make the Wood Frog the official amphibian of New York State. On Thursday morning, Winkelman and Skaneateles High School’s Wood Frog Club met with Senator Bob Antonacci to continue the process.
Earlier this month, Senator Antonacci won the race for state Senate in the 50 th District, succeeding the retiring John DeFrancisco, who has sponsored the Wood Frog bill for five consecutive years.

Skaneateles Fourth Graders Preparing for 'Holiday Giving':
SKANEATELES, NY (November 28, 2018) – State Street Intermediate School’s fourth grade class is once again working together this holiday season, giving back to the community with its annual ‘Holiday Giving’ calendar of events.
Following two years of build-up, the entire fourth grade is joining into the program this year with students beginning several days of activity on Monday, December 3.
The fourth grades ‘Giving Calendar’ begins with a book drive on December 3 before creating holiday decorations to hang inside of State Street Intermediate School on December 4.

Dickens Christmas Comes to Skaneateles Middle School:
SKANEATELES, NY (November 20, 2018) – Local actors from a Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles visited Skaneateles Middle School’s seventh grade classes on Monday to introduce the novel, A Christmas Carol .
Students participated in a trunk show featuring the novel, which saw students work directly with the actors to act out the story together as a group.
The workshop provided a unique and engaging experience for all students.
A Dickens Christmas is celebrating its 25 th anniversary in Skaneateles this season, with the celebration beginning this Friday, November 23 and running on weekends through December 23.

Skaneateles High School's Lauren Wiese Earns AP Teacher Appreciation Honors:
SKANEATELES, NY (November 20, 2018) – Skaneateles High School World Languages teacher, Lauren Wiese, was recently recognized as part of the College Board AP Teacher Appreciation honors.
Her students, by virtue of a video submission on Instagram using the hashtag #APTeacherAppreciation, nominated Wiese.
A panel of judges from the College Board reviewed several video submissions from across the country and selected Wiese as a recipient of $250 for her classroom. Scores were based on creativity, engagement and authenticity.

SHS Students Volunteer at Syracuse Rescue Mission:
SKANEATELES, NY (November 19, 2018) – Students in Alanna Kramerson’s Participation in Government class at Skaneateles High School recently made a trip to the Rescue Mission in Syracuse to complete community service and learn about the services provided by the mission in the Syracuse area.
Following a tour of the campus, the class volunteered in several areas including the Food Services Center, helping to sort out supplies in preparation for Thanksgiving as well as sorting and hanging coats from a recent coat drive.
At the Rescue Mission, a hot meal or a warm bed can be the first step to life change.
