Science students recognized:
Several Skaneateles Central Schools students competed last weekend at the 37 th Annual Central New York Science and Engineering Fair. The Syracuse Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) hosted the event at the SRC arena at Onondaga Community College on Sunday March 20, 2016. Over 200 public, private and home-schooled students in the 11-county central New York area exhibited their work.
Three Skaneateles High School students competed in the senior division (grades 9-12) of the event: Calvin Blackwell, Alex Van Riper and Alexander Wulff. Hearing on Smart Schools Bond Act March 23:
Residents will learn how the district will use funds provided through the Smart Schools Bond Act at a Community Forum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, in the Waterman School auditorium. In addition, this forum will provide a closer look at the 2016-’17 budget and propositions that will be voted on May 17. This is the second of three community forums offered this year to give residents the opportunity to learn more and to ask questions.
The Smart Schools Bond Act was passed as a part of the 2015-’15 New York State budget and approved by voters in a statewide referendum in November, 2014. DECA students win, go international:
The Skaneateles High School students who won big at the DECA State Conference will head to Nashville, TN, in April to compete against top 18,000 top scoring students in the world. They told the Board of Education this week that the rewards of competing in the program have already exceeded the awards.
The best part, they said, is that they have found their passion.
“The competition has given me a better idea about myself and where I want to go in the future,” said senior Aimee LaFrance.

New wellness twist in Middle School:
Eighth grade girls at Skaneateles Middle School are being treated to Vinyasa Flow yoga in physical education classes with teacher Jill King. The lessons include extended relaxation and meditation, as students work on setting intentions and practicing health self-mantras, said King.
Over the past five years, King has increasing practiced yoga and has used it with her swim team. “I feel it has benefits that extend into a life of inner peace and calm. Weekend event was "vintage Skaneateles":
The community packed the high school for the Senior Pasta Dinner and the Sophomore Circus Friday night. The cafeteria, commons area and gym were abuzz with activity, laughter and memories. Upstairs, parents of seniors wondered “how did they grow up so fast?” Downstairs, elementary students and parents looked up to the enthusiastic mature sophomores who entertained them at the circus. The circus is such a long-standing tradition that many of the parents said they could remember when they were the sophomores painting faces and managing booths. Teachers support students with scholarships:
Members of the Skaneateles Teachers Association are collectively working hard to nurture future teachers. This year, as with every year for the past 20 years, the STA will award scholarships to students who plan to pursue the education field. The teachers make this possible by making annual one-time donations or by having donations pulled from their paychecks every pay period.
“The STA is always looking to give back to the students,” said teacher and STA member Julie Torrey. “This scholarship fund started years ago and has grown over time. Five graduates of 2015 received $600 scholarships each.”

NEW Meningococcal Vaccine requirement:
As of September 1, 2016, all public and private school students entering 7 th and 12 th grades in New York State must be fully vaccinated against meningococcal disease in order to attend school.
The meningococcal vaccine protects against serious and sometimes deadly diseases such as meningitis (an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and sepsis (blood infections). That's why the vaccine is sometimes called the meningitis vaccine.

Blood drive exceeds goal:
Saneateles High School students gave the ultimate gift Thursday, March 3, when they donated 54 pints of blood at the annual American Red Cross Blood Drive.
Coordinated and manned by the Interact Club, the drive surpassed the goal set for Skaneateles High School. The Red Cross collected 54 total productive units, which was “103.8% of goal,” said Rob Cotter of the Red Cross. “Thanks especially to all those who took the time to assist us in our life saving mission,” he said when reporting the great outcome.
A team of mostly Interact Club students worked all day to make the event possible. After being served breakfast, students waited in line with friends and with teachers who annually give.

Recent incident puts spotlight on social media problems:
Although it was determined that there was no physical threat intended in a posting on social media that caused concern in the Skaneateles School District last week, the posting ended up putting the spotlight on a much greater issue.
Interviews with students revealed just how widespread and damaging the misuse of social media has become. Superintendent Ken Slentz, in an alert sent to parents, highlighted the worrisome discovery.
“After meeting with the student, the student's parents, and other individuals relevant to the social media posting we told you about earlier today, we have determined that there was no threat intended towards the schools or towards any specific students,” he started.

Circus and Pasta night March 11:
The Senior Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction is Friday, March 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the High School cafeteria. The Sophomore Circus will be just down the stairs in the gym entertaining children of all ages.
The pasta dinner raises funds for the senior class and keeps the costs down for the senior weekend including the Senior Ball and the After the Ball festivities (helping our kids have fun and stay safe).

Cast of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang visits Waterman:
The cast of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang put on a rousing show for Waterman School students during their Friday Morning Meeting. First, one-by-one the older students told the elementary school students what teachers they had when they were students at Waterman. They explained their roles in the fun and funny musical before singing and dancing and making the Waterman students laugh.

Student art to brighten hospital walls:
State Street School students recently gathered in the art room to proudly hold their creations that will soon hang on the walls of Crouse Hospital. For the fifth year, art created at State Street School is being donated to the hospital. The colorful works will join dozens and dozens of other works by Skaneateles students that still grace the walls of the hospital.
The 24 third, fourth and fifth grad artists who are contributing this year will be honored at an opening reception March 11. In addition to their 24 individual works of art, the donation includes two beautiful weavings created with the many hands of fourth graders in a special weaving project with teacher Sue Barry and artist Karen Pardee.

SkillsUSA Competition:
Skaneateles High School senior Tyler Short won first place in the regional SkillsUSA competition at SUNY Morrisville on Friday, February 26. Short earned a first place after competing in the Diesel Technology division. He is in the Heavy Equipment Repair and Operation program.
The Area II Region consists of 17 CTE Centers. From the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES alone, 46 CTE students competed. The top Regional finishers are eligible to compete in the NYS Competition held at the Fairgrounds in Syracuse on April 27-29.
