Students shine with professional dancers at Saturday concert:
Skaneateles Middle School and High School students have had the opportunity to watch and perform with professional dancers this week, as Sean McLeod and his NYC Dance Company have been doing an artist-in-residency here.
The Skaneateles Education Foundation teamed up with the MS and HS Drama Departments to bring "Sean McLeod's Broadway: A Project for Community" here. Students have joined the talented and enthusiastic performers on stage. Students will perform alongside this internationally-acclaimed producer and choreographer and his dancers during a concert at 7 p.m. May 7 in the High School Auditorium. As if it wasn’t astounding enough that five Skaneateles High School students made it all the way to the International Career Development Conference in Nashville during the first year of the DECA Club in Skaneateles, the team did well – and came home with a medalist.

High School Senior Exhibit:
Two Skaneateles High School seniors had work in the Central New York Art Guild’s 2016 High School Senior Exhibit at the Edgewood Galleries in Syracuse. Marysa Corona and Finan Malcolm's artwork was selected and on display. Corona got top honors for her painting “Maine,” said art teacher Tracy Hale. “Marysa received the CNY Art Guild’s Steve Von Hendy Watercolor Award. Congratulations to both artists for a very creative year,” said Hale.

SCS earns "Reward School" status:
Skaneateles Schools have again been recognized in the top 20 percent of schools in the state named by the State Education Department as Reward Schools . In addition this year, State Street School earned the additional designation of a High Progress School (in the top 10% of the state) because of its continued marked progress on state assessments.
The State Education Department determines the accountability status of each school through a variety of means including 3-8 assessments and Regents exams. Skaneateles’ three eligible schools (excluding Waterman, which doesn’t give assessments) have been identified as Reward Schools for High Performance while State Street School earned the additional designation.

Ithaca trip takes art students around the world:
Skaneateles High School art teacher Jessica Sawchuk recently took 25 students in grades 9 through 12 on a creative journey that spanned countries and centuries.
On a visit to the Johnson Museum at Cornell University, students saw, felt, discussed and interacted with the works of ancient and modern artists. The students were from her studio art, advanced art, independent study and ceramics courses.
“Sometimes you lose sight of why you make art to begin with. There can be deep historical and spiritual reasons,” said Sawchuk. She hopes students understand this through seeing and experiencing the art created by other people – from decades/centuries ago to the present . “I hope it opens their minds and gives them something more to work with. Business teacher repeats history at Dinosaur:
Students learn entrepreneurship at Dinosaur
Dan Mulroy went back to Dinosaur BBQ on Wednesday and ended up in a “sandwich.”
He stood between the students he escorted there from his business classes in Skaneateles and the teachers who had inspired him when he was a student at CNS High School. He enjoyed being sandwiched between the past and the future, he said, because he still remembers the impact that the visit had on him when he was in high school.
Mulroy first visited Dinosaur 13 years ago as a junior in high school.
During the visit, he was inspired by the legendary John Stage, who started the restaurant with some buddies in 1988 (in just one location). Now, the restaurant spans from here to NYC on the east to Chicago to the west.

Viego has “the right stuff”:
Anyone who knows Skaneateles High School valedictorian Vincent Viego can tell he has “the right stuff,” and every Ivy League school seems to have figured it out as well.
One-by-one, eight Ivy League universities said yes to Viego. Via phone, email and official letter over the past two months, Viego has been accepted into Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania and Yale. And also, to name a few: Stanford, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Emory, Johns Hopkins and Tufts.

New bus replacement plan offers a better use of resources
Residents to vote on new and innovative bus plan May 17
At a special meeting of the Board of Education on Tuesday night, board members approved a recommendation to establish a school bus replacement plan that will ultimately reduce the number of buses, increase the predictability of costs, and better ensure the safety of student riders. Voters will be asked to approve the plan on this year's May 17 ballot.

Winter system hits three days after April Fool’s Day
Just days after mowing his lawn in a pair of shorts, Skaneateles Superintendent Ken Slentz put on his winter coat, hat and boots and climbed into his truck in the early morning darkness Monday to check out the condition of some of the twisting and turning 77 square miles of roads in the school district.

Students explore habitats:
Second graders at Waterman Elementary School spent the day exploring habitats of the world in exhibits that they created themselves.
It was hands-on learning at its best as they listened to the sounds of the rainforest, trudged through deserts and explored pond life in various classrooms.
Each second grade classroom researched one particular region of the world, from the Polar Regions of Antarctica and the arctic to the forests and deserts.
With their new-found knowledge, each class of students developed a classroom museum to educate their peers in other classes.
On Habitat Day, second grade classes went from room-to-room, exploring areas created by fellow students.

Student video named finalist in human rights film competition
Kate Hardy’s students made use of the Zoom Room, funded by the Skaneateles Education Foundation
A video called “Tear the Tape” produced by students in tenth grade Honors English classes at Skaneateles High School is a finalist in the national film-making contest sponsored by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights.
The film was created by Hope Glowacki, Lily Datz, Madie Rhoad, Gianna Eidel, Grace Hilpl, and Nieve Morse. It was selected out of hundreds of submissions to the Speak Truth to Power competition from around the country – and is now one of six finalists.

Teachers are the best polar bears:
The brave staff members on Team Brain Freeze at Skaneateles Central Schools have been presented with the trophy for having raised the most money in the Polar Bear Plunge.
Six teachers from three of our four schools pledged to jump during this year’s Winterfest celebration. Last week, they posed with the trophy they earned for the fourth year in a row as the highest fundraising team.
Teachers Bob Broddus, Dan Kurzen, Corey Riley, Brian Sevey, Justin Suhr and Josh Williams raised $1,340, which will go directly to three special community organizations: SAVES, the fire department and the Skaneateles Education Foundation.

For a brief window of time, there was an almost eerie new twist to the annual Fourth Grade Wax Museum of Famous Americans. During the afternoon session of the museum, fourth grade teachers had the students go through their own “museum” in the hallways, to view each other.
And so Neil Armstrong came face-to-face with Pocohantas. Inventors like Thomas Edison saw into the future as folks like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates passed by. Sacajawea and Davy Crocket crossed paths with George Lucas and Muhammad Ali.

CNY Science and Engineering Fair Award Winners:
Several Skaneateles Central Schools students competed at the 37 th Annual Central New York Science and Engineering Fair. The Syracuse Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) hosted the event at the SRC arena at Onondaga Community College on Sunday March 20, 2016. Over 230 public, private and home-schooled students in the central New York area exhibited their work.
Three Skaneateles High School students competed in the senior division (grades 9-12) of the event: Calvin Blackwell, Alex Van Riper and Alexander Wulff.
