OOTM, Envirothon Recognized at BOE Meeting
SKANEATELES, NY (June 20, 2018) – The Skaneateles Central Schools Board of Education recently recognized the district’s Odyssey of the Mind and Envirothon teams.
Students and coordinators of each team were invited to the Tuesday, June 19 Board of Education meeting to tell their story and receive congratulations from current Superintendent Ken Slentz and Board members.
In its 21st year of participation in the New York State Envirothon competition, Skaneateles High School placed third overall of the 45 counties that were represented.
The Envirothon competition tests students’ knowledge and understanding of natural resource issues within New York State. The spirit of competition is then used to help stimulate the students’ interests in environmental concerns and motivate them to further develop their skills and grow into environmentally-aware, action-oriented adults.
This year’s Skaneateles team consisted of students Alex Flanagan, Michael Lovier, Jack Lovier, Mila Miller and Nick Piciorek with coordinator Rick Garrett.
The State Street Odyssey of the Mind team consisting of students Matthew Leonardis, Maura Leonardis, Amelia Blados, Nico Moro and Heschel Eidel with coaches Beth Moro and Carey Eidel competed at the OOTM World Finals at Iowa State University last month placing 21st of 64 teams.
Coordinator Kelley McQuiggan joined the team on Tuesday.
In addition to competing, team members were able to experience many events related to World Finals such as pin trading, parades, parties, fireworks, living in a dorm and eating in a college dining hall. If that wasn’t enough, during the five day trip the team was able to squeeze in an afternoon at a water park and a couple hours at the Mall of America before boarding their plane back to Syracuse.
