SHS Places Third in NYS Envirothon Competition

SKANEATELES, NY (May 31, 2018) – In its 21st year of participation in the New York State Envirothon competition, Skaneateles High School placed third overall of the 45 counties that were represented.

This year’s competition once again took place at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY on May 23-24.

The Envirothon competition tests students’ knowledge and understanding of natural resource issues within New York State.  The spirit of competition is then used to help stimulate the students’ interests in environmental concerns and motivate them to further develop their skills and grow into environmentally-aware, action-oriented adults.

The Envirothon is split into county and state competitions.  County winners move to the state competition where their knowledge is challenged in five areas: aquatic ecology, forestry, soil and land use, wildlife, and current environmental issues.

This year’s Skaneateles team consisted of students Alex Flanagan, Michael Lovier, Jack Lovier, Mila Miller and Nick Piciorek.

The students on this year’s state team are set to be recognized at the June 19 Board of Education meeting inside the District Office Board Room, located at 45 E. Elizabeth St.
