SCS Team Advances to OOTM World Finals in Iowa

SKANEATELES, NY (April 9, 2018) – Of the twelve Skaneateles Central Schools teams to take part in the Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition held on the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES campus on March 10, seven of those teams advanced to the NYS Competition held in Binghamton on April 7.

Following the weekend’s state competition, Skaneateles Central Schools is proud to announce that one of those teams has advanced to the OOTM World Finals to be held at Iowa State University in Ames, IA on May 23-26.

The State Street Elementary team coached by Beth Moro and Carey Eidel, which includes students Amelia Blados, Heschel Eidel, Matthew Leonardis, Maura Leonardis and Nico Moro, placed first in the NYS Competition with their problem “Mockumentary, Seriously.”  As a result of their victory, the group now advances to the World Finals in Iowa.

This year marks the 39th annual World Finals competition and the 10th to be held at Iowa State University.

For those who cannot make it to the tournament to watch, keep an eye on www.odysseyofthemind.com and visit the 2018 World Finals link for pictures, live video feeds and videos from the World Finals.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition that teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests.  Students learn how to identify challenges and to think creatively to solve the problems at hand.

Skaneateles Central School teams in Odyssey of the Mind are open to students in grades 3-12, and consist of seven members per team.

Other Division I State Street teams finished seventh, ninth, sixth, and sixteenth overall at the NYS competition with the district’s Division III high school team placing tenth.

A full list of results is below.

“Each of the teams performed well and we had a great day,” said Skaneateles Central School’s OOTM coordinator, Kelley McQuiggan.  “Special recognition goes to our state championship team as they move onto the World Finals next month.”
