SKANEATELES, NY (March 23, 2018) – Skaneateles Central Schools Superintendent Ken Slentz hosted a Safety & Security Community Forum on Thursday evening in the Skaneateles High School Auditorium which touched on several items including the current status and planning for improved security elements within the district.
With the entire community in mind, district officials were on hand during the forum to record the evening’s proceedings for those who could not be in attendance.

Board of Education candidate information is available in the District Office from 7:30 am – 4 pm Monday through Friday. All applications will be due on April 16 at 4 pm.

Kick Butt's Day Warns of Vaping and E-Cigs:
In honor of Kick Butt's Day on Wednesday, March 21, a tobacco prevention program, the high school SADD club delivered messages on the dangers of vaping during the morning announcements in Skaneateles High School. T his Thursday, March 22, we will hold a community forum in the high school auditorium beginning at 7 PM to discuss safety and security with our schools. After yet another tragic incident in Maryland on Tuesday, refining our plans, processes, and staffing to better ensure the safety of our students and staff continues to be our highest priority. Dear parents/guardians and community members – as suggested in the February Partnering with Parents newsletter, April 2 will now be a regular school day .
Building our calendar each year requires us to follow state guidelines to ensure that we receive all of our state aid dollars to support our budget. If the rules are not followed, we lose valuable funding that impacts our operations. During this past school year, the State Education Department provided clarification to school dis-tricts regarding how certain days could be used within our calendar. The new rules were expected to be released on March 12 by the Board of Regents, but that decision has been put off until April 10. Student Artwork Featured in Schweinfurth Exhibit:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 19, 2018) – Schweinfurth Art Center’s “Both Ends of the Rainbow” exhibit is featuring several pieces of art from various Skaneateles Central School students.
The annual exhibit showcases approximately 1,000 pieces of artwork in total by regional K-12 students.
Located at 205 Genesee St. in Auburn, the Schweinfurth Art Center is a non-profit gallery which offers five exhibitions each year featuring regional, national, and international artists.
This year’s “Both Ends of the Rainbow” exhibit will run through April 8.

SHS Students Enjoy Success at DECA Conference:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 19, 2018) – A group of 15 Skaneateles High School students recently participated in the DECA State Career Conference held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center with sophomore students Connor Gell and JP Soderberg advancing to the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, GA from April 21-24.
Gell and Soderberg followed up a first place finish in the Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making event at the regional competition with a second place overall finish in the state competition, with over 30 teams competing.
The duo is only the second group ever to earn a runner-up position at the state competition from Skaneateles, joining Chris Niebhur in 2016.

SCS Students Earn Scholastic Art & Writing Awards:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 19, 2018) – The Skaneateles Central School District is proud to announce that three SCS students have earned national recognition in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
Rachael Fenney, Brianna Luce and Olivia Walker each won medals as a part of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for their respective pieces.
Walker received a gold medal for her charcoal drawing, Fenney was awarded a silver medal for her photograph titled “Rights”, and Luce won a silver medal for her photograph titled “Crafty Dancer.”
All three students were identified by panels of creative professionals as some of the most talented young artists in the nation.

Go Back in Time at State Street Wax Museum:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 16, 2018) – Fourth-grade students at State Street Intermediate School provided fellow students, teachers, and family an opportunity to go back in time and walk through history as a part of their annual Wax Museum of Famous Americans held at the school on Thursday evening.
The day consisted of two sessions. An afternoon session was held for third and fifth-grade students to take a tour, while an evening session was put on for the public.
A tradition carried on for decades, the fourth-grade students lined the hallways of State Street School dressed as famous Americans they have studied, posing along with cleverly placed props.

SCS Day of Recognition Memorializes MSD Victims:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 14, 2018) – On Wednesday, students from Skaneateles High School and Skaneateles Middle School each participated in a Day of Recognition from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in order to memorialize the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy that took place on February 14.
At the third period bell, students who wished to take part in the recognition ceremonies were invited to the middle school commons or high school auditorium. Students who did not wish to participate, remained in class.
Student leaders from Skaneateles Middle School prepared a heartfelt display in the commons, which honored each of the 17 victims with 17 minutes of silence, as each victim’s name was read every 60-seconds.

Seven OOTM Teams Advance to State Competition:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 12, 2018) – Of the twelve Skaneateles Central Schools teams to take part in the Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition held on the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES campus on March 10, seven of those teams have advanced to the NYS Competition to be held in Binghamton on April 7.
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition that teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn how to identify challenges and to think creatively to solve the problems at hand.

Aidan Bennett Inducted into DECA Honor Society:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 9, 2018) – Skaneateles High School Senior, Aidan Bennett, has been inducted into the New York DECA Honor Society. Bennett is the first Skaneateles student to receive this honor.
To be inducted into the New York DECA Honor Society a student must be an active member of DECA for at least three years, attend the state competition at least once, have an overall average of 90 in business courses and be an active member in the community.

Youth Theatre Performs Echoes for SMS Students:
SKANEATELES, NY (March 6, 2018) – The Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre visited the Skaneateles High School auditorium on Monday to perform Echoes for Skaneateles Middle School students.
The performance program featured original scripts written by middle school students across the state, including Skaneateles Middle School.
Merry-Go-Round actors brought the students’ writing—funny, thought-provoking, or heartfelt—to life with costumes and props, musical instruments, and characters from zany to poignant. Senior Pasta Dinner, Sophomore Circus on March 9:
SKANEATELES, NY (February 28, 2018) – The Skaneateles High School Class of 2018 will be plating pasta dinners on Friday, March 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
The evening will include delicious pasta dinners, musical entertainment from the Skaneateles school music department, the annual silent auction, as well as the traditional Sophomore Circus taking place down the hall in the gym for children of all ages.
Families, senior citizens, students and athletic teams are invited to enjoy a pasta dinner with meatless sauce, bread, salad, beverage and dessert. Tickets cost just $6, with children 5 and under free, and may be purchased from a member of the senior class or at the door.
