Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the “essence” of reading.  It is the process through which the reader creates meaning of the written word.  It is not enough to be able to just decode (sound out) the words, but the reader must also understand what they have read.  Understanding can be assessed through re-telling the story, questioning and through written response.
