Musical Styles
Professional's Lesson Plan Using IMPACT* Model
- Preparation:
Have students check their passwords. Expand the U: Drive space for all students. Schedule the laptops and LCD projector for at least two days. Schedule Computer teacher as a consultant during the PPT instruction.
- Day one:
The students receive background instruction on various styles of music; including musical theatre, country, rock, opera, operetta, swing, jazz, and ragtime. Each student is assigned a particular style to research. The class is divided into groups of three or four.
- DaysTwo through Four:
Schedule the class to conduct research in the school library media center. They will be encouraged to locate additional resources using the Internet. Many of the recommended websites are located in the virtual library under the music subject heading. The librarian will also review use of print resources such as chronological references and composer indexes. The students will have time to find information relating to their style of music.
- Day Five:
Students will receive instruction on putting together their power point presentations. Each student will work off of a laptop while viewing each step on a projector. Today, students will be given a sample outline of what content is needed on each slide. They will learn how to create their backgrounds, fonts, colors, and basic animation. Have students save their information to both their U:drive and a disk.
- Day Six:
Pick up from yesterday's introduction to power point. Show how to insert an image, clip art, and sound. Have the students watch and then perform each step. Students should have time to finish up their presentations by adding content.
- Class Sharing Time:
Students will show their power point presentations to the class. Each student should participate by taking turns speaking – one slide per student.
Purpose
- Rationale: As part of the music curriculum, students study musical styles. The classroom teacher, library media specialist and the computer teacher cooperate to teach skills essential for research and necessary for this project.
- Instructional Goals:
- Motivational Goals
- Learning Objectives
Audience
- Learner Characteristics--Most students have had experience using the Internet, composing a simple Power Pt. presentation. They have not had a lot of experience taking notes, organizing and summarizing information.
- Class size is about 24.
- Classes can move freely between computer lab and library or be assigned to either place.
- Most students feel positive about school and about their abilities. "Push in" teachers will assist students working below grade level.
- Learning Environment--
