The Novels of Charles Dickens |
|
In 19th Century Victorian England, only the wealthiest individuals could afford to buy books. As literacy among the middle class Londoners grew, so, too, did the demand for entertaining works of literature. This led to the development of the serialized novel, a work of fiction published in weekly or monthly magazines. Charles Dickens quickly became the undisputed master of the serialized novel. By publishing his narratives chapter by chapter in a widely-read magazine, Dickens became the most popular writer of his time. Each week, families gathered together to follow the exploits of his fascinating characters. The English Department of the Skaneateles invites you to read along as we recreate this timeless Victorian reading experience. Read a new installment of Great Expectations or A Tale of Two Cities on our website each week between September and June.
