Envirothon team is second in state

“Basskickers,” the Envirothon Team from Skaneateles High School, won second place at the New York State Envirothon Thursday, June 3, at Keuka College.

Teams from 52 of New York’s 62 counties attended the competition, which challenges students to use their knowledge of the environment in five areas:  aquatic ecology, forestry, soils/land use, wildlife, and a current issue (“Protection of Groundwater through Urban, Agricultural and Environmental Planning”).

To come in second place when competing against the best teams in the state is quite an accomplishment, said Rick Garrett, the team’s advisor.  The team won the right to compete at the state event after winning first place in Onondaga County and first place in the CNY region in April.  Another Skaneateles team placed second in that competition.

Taking first place at the NY State Envirothon was a team from Candor High School in Tioga County.  This was the school’s seventh win in the past eight years.  The team will go on to compete in California in August.

Two other teams from Central New York were in the top ten finishers: G. Ray Bodley High School of Oswego County placed third and Chittenango High School of Madison County placed fourth.

Team members include:
