Waterman Library Mission

The mission of the library is to promote life long learning through information literacy and a love of literature for all students.

Student Access

The Waterman library is open to students from bus arrival until bus departure.  First and second grade students are welcome anytime.  From mid-October on kindergartners also have an opportunity to visit the library each day.  In addition, each class visits the library weekly.

Books are loaned for one week.  No fines are charged for overdue books, but no other books may be borrowed until the overdue one is returned. After thirty days, a letter is sent to the family requesting the book's return or a check for replacement value.

Damaged Book Policy

Please help your child to be responsible for his/her book. Most book damage can be eliminated if books are kept away from younger siblings, food, pets, and brought to and from school in a plastic bag in the backpack. In the event of water damage or severe damage; book replacement cost will be charged.

Curriculum Overview

Developmental Kindergarten...

Is introduced to:

• Print goes from left to right
• Book care
  • How to turn pages
  • Transport to and from school in a plastic bag
  • Safe place at home away from food, pets, and younger children
• Parts of a book
  • Spine, book jacket, book cover, title, author, illustrator, publisher

Is exposed to:

• a variety of literature, rich in language (i.e. nursery rhymes, participation stories, Caldecott Medal books, and nonfiction where appropriate).
  

Kindergarten

Is introduced to:

• Print goes from left to right
• Book care
  • How to turn pages
  • Transport to and from school in a plastic bag
  • Safe place at home away from food, pets, and younger children
• Parts of a book
  • Spine, spine label, book jacket, book cover, title, author, illustrator, publisher
• Fiction-made up story from the author's brain

Is exposed to:

• a variety of literature, rich in language (i.e.Nursery rhymes, Caldecott Medal books, and nonfiction where appropriate).

First Grade...

• Reviews book care and parts of book.
• Is introduced to the title page
• Studies how fiction is organized, practices finding spine labels in 3 different fiction collections-everyone, holiday, and chapter.
• Is introduced to nonfiction definition, how it's organized, and searches for spine labels in collection.

Is exposed to:

• a variety of literature rich in language. There is greater emphasis on folklore, storytelling, and Caldecott Medal books.

Second Grade ...

• Reviews book care, parts of book, fiction, and nonfiction
• Is introduced to the encyclopedia, what it is and how it's organized. Searches are done in print and at a bookmarked site online.

Is exposed to:

• a variety of literature rich in language. Biographies and legends are introduced. Contemporary stories from other lands, folklore, and Caldecott Medal books are featured.

Featured Artist

Margaret Middleton, a Skaneateles Central School graduate and a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, completed the Waterman Library's woodland fantasy during the 2004 summer. The woodland columns complement the storyarea in a tree house setting detailed by Margaret as well. The Parent Teacher Club provided the funds for this project, and we at Waterman School truly appreciate Ms. Middleton's creation and the generosity of the P.T.C.
