January 2008

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and had an opportunity to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. January doesn’t allow our students or staff a chance to move slowly back into our regular routine. We administer the New York State ELA exams during the week of January 7 through 11. All students at State Street will be taking this exam. The schedule is as follows:

	Grade 3	January 10th and January 11th beginning at 9:05 a.m.
	Grade 4	January 9, 10 and 11 beginning at 9:05 a.m.
	Grade 5	January 7th and January 8th beginning at 10:30 a.m.

It’s very important that children arrive to school on time in order for them to take their test in their regular classroom. If the exam has started, students arriving late will not be allowed to enter his or her classroom. They will have to make-up the exam at a later date. There are stringent rules that we have to follow. If your child is not feeling well on the day of an exam, it would be better that they stay home. If a child begins a test and they become ill and can’t finish, they will get a score based on what they have already completed and will not be allowed to finish that portion of the exam.

It’s very important that students have plenty of rest and a good breakfast before taking these exams. All of the exams will be administered in the mornings. It will take approximately one hour to complete. Our students are fully prepared. All the skills that are necessary for these exams are part of our ELA curriculum. If your child appears nervous on the day of his or her exam, just remind them to do their very best. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
